Zalakaros Hungary

Zalakaros is a town in Zala County, Hungary. Zalakaros is famous for its thermal spring baths. It gained its fame in 1967, when prospective oil drilling struck a nearly 96 °C (205 °F) source at a depth of 1000 metres. Zalakaros is a tourist town in the Nagykanizsa district of Zala county, in the Zalaapáti mountain range area. It is located in the southeast part of the county, between Keszthely and Nagykanizsa, and owes its tourism to the thermal baths that operate in the settlement. He is a member of the Association of Hungarian Spa Cities. It is the seventh most popular settlement in Hungary in terms of guest nights in commercial accommodation. There is a civil guard in the city. The first mention of the agreement dates from 1254 as Korus. At that time, the servants of the Hungarian-speaking castle with land lived in the village. King Bela's wife brought foreign settlers here. His church was built in 1430 in the settlement, which was probably part of Somogy County at the time. Turkish times put a heavy burden on the village, as both Turks and border soldiers serving in Kanizsa Castle mourned the harvest of the locals. As a result, its population is almost completely depleted. In the 18th century, the settlement was mentioned as a market town, which, however, could only begin to develop to a lesser extent after the drainage of the surrounding marshes in the late 19th century, mainly due to the construction of the Southern Railway . It joined traffic in the 1920s with intercity bus services. It was around this time that the local post office was also built. After World War II, emigration began, the main leadership of which became the highly industrialized Nagykanizsa. In 1962, thermal water was found in the settlement, and in 1965, the spa opened, which has been visited by more than 20 million people who have wanted to relax and recover since its existence. Plans for the development and layout of the settlement and recreation area were made in 1969-70 (ZALATERV / Tamás Kiss). Thanks to the spa, tourism began. Development and rapid development began with the efficient management of the Zalakaros Recreation Area Development Committee. Zalakaros received the rank of a large village in 1984. A new kindergarten or gas pipeline network was established in 1987, and a new school was established in 1990. Zalakaros remained a major tourist center even after the regime change, but the New spas appearing in the area may be serious competition for the settlement that received city status in 1997.
