About the destination

Girona is a one of the biggest towns in Catalonia, enclosed by defensive walls and the Río Onyar. It is located at the north of the region and serves as the capital of the Girona Province, which includes the stunning Costa Brava. This ancient city is medieval and cosmopolitan at the same time, with a well preserved Old Town and full of hip bars and chic shops. The town has an attractive Jewish quarter, an impressive cathedral and several interesting museums. Girona’s cathedral, uphill from the river, can be seen from many points of the city. After walking through the old town you come to a wide stairway leading up to the cathedral. The cathedral has got a beautiful baroque façade and inside it has the widest Gothic nave in Europe. The cathedral is part of the town's historic and archaeological walk which runs along the old town, mostly atop of the city's ancient ramparts. The church of Sant Feliu is the second most important church in Girona, just a few steps away from the Cathedral. This church has a mix between Romanesque and Gothic styles and is dedicated to Saint Feliu, a Catalan saint and martyr. Near the cathedral, we find the Arabic Baths, an imitation of medieval Muslim baths. As a university centre, Girona combines past and vibrant present: art galleries, trendy cafés, and a lively nightlife. It is also a perfect base to explore the surrounding region. It sits just outside of the Pyrenees Mountains and is in close proximity to the beaches of the Costa Brava. It truly is a beautiful part of Catalonia that should be on everyone's itinerary.
